Gli americani Andy Benesh e Miles Partain hanno causato il più grande sconvolgimento della prima giornata del main draw del Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Gstaad Elite16, iniziando la loro campagna nelle Alpi svizzere con il piede giusto giovedì.

La coppia statunitense, nona testa di serie nell'evento svizzero, ha sconfitto la Norvegia di Anders Mol e Christian Sørum, prima testa di serie, in uno degli otto incontri maschili disputati nel primo turno di pool.

Coming from a third-place finish at the Ostrava Elite16 event one month ago, the 28-year-old Benesh and the 21-year-old Partain started behind, but had the power to turn the tables and defeat the reigning Olympic, world and Beach Pro Tour champions 2-1 (19-21, 24-22, 15-12), winning the first duel between the teams.

The Americans now share the top spot in Pool A with Dutch Olympic medallists Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, who also needed three sets (21-19, 18-21, 15-13) to overcome Czech qualifiers Jakub Sepka and Tomas Semerad.

Venerdì, nella seconda giornata di pool play a Gstaad, americani e norvegesi affronteranno olandesi e cechi. La squadra migliore della pool passerà direttamente ai quarti di finale, mentre la seconda e la terza dovranno disputare gli ottavi di finale.

Beach Pro Tour Gstaad Elite16 – Match Schedule and Results

Nella Pool B sono partiti in vantaggio Cherif Younousse/Ahmed Tijan e Daniele Lupo/Enrico Rossi. I qatarini hanno sconfitto (21-15, 21-13) i campioni in carica di Gstaad Elite16, i cileni Marco ed Esteban Grimalt, mentre gli europei hanno ottenuto una vittoria per 2-1 (22-20, 15-21, 15-11) sui brasiliani Andre Loyola e George Wanderley.

La Pool C ha visto un paio di due set, con i polacchi Michal Bryl e Bartosz Łosiak che hanno battuto i qualificati austriaci Alexander Horst e Julian Hörl per 21-13, 21-11 e i brasiliani Pedro Solberg e Gustavo 'Guto' Carvalhaes che hanno avuto la meglio sui francesi Youssef Krou e Arnaud Gauthier-Rat per 2-0 (21-11, 21-15).

In Pool D, teams from Italy and Germany remain undefeated after the first day of action. Italians Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri needed the tie-breaker (21-16, 13-21, 15-7) to beat the home team of Marco Krattiger and Florian Breer while Germans Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler triumphed 2-0 (21-17, 23-21) over Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira.

The conclusion of pool play is on the schedule for Friday, with the elimination rounds taking place on Saturday. The medal matches will be held in the Swiss Alps on Sunday.
