The 35-year-old Brazilians were one of two teams to win a pair of matches on Pool B and have now extended their winning streak on the Beach Pro Tour to 14 matches – their last defeat was in the quarterfinals of the Gstaad Elite16.

Bárbara, a Rio 2016 Olympic silver medalist, and Carol had a perfect first day in Montréal, getting a three-set (21-23, 21-12, 15-8) victory over compatriots Talita Antunes and Thamela Coradello and a sweep (21-19, 21-16) of Americans Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes.

The two are already guaranteed in the elimination rounds in Canada and will conclude pool play on Friday against Chinese Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia, who also went undefeated on the first day of the main draw in Montréal. The Asians faced the same opponents and started their campaign with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-15) win over the Americans, following it up with a straight-set (21-9, 21-19) victory over the Brazilians. The Chinese will play Bárbara and Carol for the top spot in the pool on Friday while Cheng/Hughes and Talita/Thamela battle for a spot in the elimination rounds.

Nuss makes a dig during the match against the Canadians

The other two women’s pools had just one round of matches on Thursday and Pool C had two American victories, with Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss topping Canadians Sarah Pavan and Molly McBain in straight sets (21-13, 21-12) and Betsi Flint and Julia Scoles downing compatriots Sarah Sponcil and Terese Cannon in the tie-breaker (14-21, 21-13, 15-10).

In Pool D, Dutch Olympians Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam defeated Canadians Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) while Australian Olympic medalists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho prevailed over Swiss up-and-comers Zoé Vergé-Dépré and Esmée Böbner in two sets (22-20, 21-19).

“We are really proud with our performance today,” Stam reacted. “It’s always great to win our first pool match, especially against a great team as Canada and with the home crowd against us. We fought for every point and we really wanted to play our game despite the adversities.”

L'Elite16 di Montréal continua venerdì con la conclusione del gioco delle piscine. I gironi eliminatori si terranno sabato, con gli ottavi di finale e i quarti di finale, mentre le semifinali e le partite per le medaglie si svolgeranno domenica.
