L'Argentina ha completato una settimana perfetta nella Volleyball Nations League 2023 con un'altra vittoria ad Anaheim, negli Stati Uniti, ed è salita al terzo posto in classifica in vista dell'ultima giornata della Fase Preliminare di sabato.

Le medaglie di bronzo olimpiche di Tokyo hanno dovuto affrontare una dura battaglia con l'Iran, ma sono riuscite a sconfiggere le asiatiche per 3-2 (25-19, 28-30, 27-29, 25-20, 15-11) nella loro ultima partita prima delle Finali della VNL 2023.

The South Americans, who also got wins over Serbia, Germany and hosts USA this week in California, are now in third place as they completed their Preliminary Phase campaign with nine wins in 12 matches and 26 points – they can still be passed by Poland and USA on Sunday. Iran remain in 12^th place with two wins and ten points.

Middle blocker Agustin Loser was in excellent form for Argentina as the 25-year-old Tokyo Olympic medallist registered 21 points with a double-double of 11 kills and incredible ten blocks.

“We never stopped playing,” Loser commented about the Argentinean comeback. “I felt like we wasted some opportunities to win the second and third sets, but we had a strong mentality to still come back. I’m happy with what we did today. We’ve been working very hard since the start of the VNL, we never returned to Argentina. We’re very focused on the VNL and we’re very happy to compete in the Finals.”

Anche il festeggiato Luciano Palonsky, che sabato ha festeggiato il suo 24° compleanno, ha avuto un'ottima prestazione, realizzando 17 punti (16 kills, un blocco), tre in più del collega esterno Luciano Vicentin, che ha registrato 14 kills.

L'esterno Morteza Sharifi è stato il miglior marcatore iraniano con 16 punti (14 kills, un ace, un blocco) - l'opposto Faroji Hajipour ne ha aggiunti altri 14, mentre l'esterno Amirhossein Esfandiar ne ha prodotti 13.

L'Argentina è riuscita a conquistare la vittoria nonostante abbia concesso più punti in termini di errori rispetto agli iraniani (40 a 37), mentre i sudamericani sono stati più produttivi in termini di kills (65 a 53), blocchi (14 a 13) e aces (cinque a tre).

Nella prima partita della giornata ad Anaheim, la Serbia ha sconfitto la Bulgaria per 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) ed è entrata nella zona di qualificazione per le Finali all'ottavo posto con sei vittorie.

L'opposto Drazen Luburic ha guidato l'attacco serbo con 15 punti, seguito dal battitore esterno Pavle Peric, autore di 11 punti. La Bulgaria ha ottenuto 12 punti da Asparuh Asparuhov e altri dieci dal battitore esterno Denis Karyagin.

Domenica, ultimo giorno della Fase Preliminare della VNL, in California si giocheranno tre partite: Cuba contro Iran, alle 13:30 ora locale (20:30 UTC), Francia contro Germania alle 17:00 ora locale (00:00 UTC, lunedì) e USA contro Bulgaria alle 20:30 ora locale (03:30 UTC, lunedì).
