La Turchia brilla e si aggiudica il primo oro in VNL

La Turchia, paese amante della pallavolo, ha ottenuto il più grande successo della sua nazionale femminile fino ad oggi domenica, quando le Sultane della Rete sono diventate la terza squadra diversa a vincere la Volleyball Nations League.

Giocando ad Arlington, negli Stati Uniti, le europee hanno dominato la Cina, potenza asiatica, con una vittoria per 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16) nella partita che ha concluso la quinta edizione del torneo al College Park Center.

Led by first-year world champion head coach Daniele Santarelli, the Turkish joined the United States, who won the first three editions of the VNL in 2018, 2019 and 2021, and Italy, who took the title last year, in the exclusive list of women’s national teams that managed to lift the coveted trophy.

The result also marks the most significant victory of Turkish volleyball ever, being the first world-level title won by the country. Prior to the VNL 2023, the Sultans of the Net had the silver and bronze medals won in the VNL in 2018 and 2021, respectively, and the silver medals earned at the European Championship in 2003 and 2019 as their most relevant results at the international level.

Nuova aggiunta alla squadra nel 2023, l'opposto Melissa Vargas è stata inarrestabile contro le asiatiche. La stella ventitreenne ha guidato tutti i marcatori con 26 punti (21 kills, tre ace, due blocchi), arrivando in momenti chiave per le europee.

Team captain Eda Erdem, who lifted the VNL trophy, and ferocious hitter Ebrar Karakurt, who produced the game-winning point with a stuff block, also had strong performances. Each of them added 12 points, with the middle blocker registering eight kills and four blocks, while the opposite-turned-into-outside-hitter had seven kills, two aces and three blocks.

“I’m living a dream right now,” Erdem reacted. “I just can’t believe it, it doesn’t feel real. I’ve been representing my country since 2005 and there’s been so much sacrifice, so much sadness and so much joy. It’s been a long journey and I think that this year, with coach Santarelli, he made us believe we could be the champions. He helped us grow and remember who we are. I’m so proud of my team, we made history, we waited for it for so long.”

In difesa, il libero Gizem Örge, tornato in nazionale nel 2023 dopo quattro anni di assenza, è stato il principale protagonista, con ben 20 punti.

Anche la Cina ha avuto ottime prestazioni dalle sue due giocatrici principali nella partita per la medaglia d'oro, con l'esterno mancino Li Yingying che ha realizzato 21 punti (19 kills, un ace, un blocco) e il capitano della squadra e middle blocker Yuan Xinyue che ne ha aggiunti altri 11, con nove kills, un ace e un blocco.

Come le turche, anche le asiatiche hanno ottenuto il loro miglior risultato di sempre nella VNL, migliorando le medaglie di bronzo vinte nel 2018 e nel 2019.

Domenica scorsa, la Polonia ha conquistato la sua prima medaglia in assoluto nella VNL prevalendo sugli Stati Uniti nello spareggio (25-15, 16-25, 25-19, 18-25, 17-15) per concludere al terzo posto.

Con l'incoronazione delle campionesse femminili della VNL 2023, l'attenzione si sposta ora sugli uomini, che disputeranno le finali la prossima settimana, da mercoledì a domenica, a Danzica, in Polonia. Oltre al Paese ospitante, si contenderanno l'oro anche Argentina, Brasile, Francia, Italia, Giappone, Slovenia e Stati Uniti.
