Una prestazione stellare contro la Turchia nella partita per la medaglia d'oro ha consacrato la palleggiatrice esterna americana Abigail Vander Wal come giocatrice più preziosa del Campionato mondiale di pallavolo U19 femminile FIVB 2023.

La 16enne battitrice esterna ha segnato 19 punti contro le turche, guidando la rimonta americana e confermando la sua selezione come miglior giocatrice dei dieci giorni di torneo svoltisi a Osijek, in Croazia, e a Szeged, in Ungheria.

Vander Wal, who will play collegiate volleyball in the United States at the University of Texas at Austin in two years, also made it to the tournament’s Dream Team alongside one American teammate, two players from Türkiye and one from each of Italy, Croatia and Japan.

“The individual awards mean a lot, and I do appreciate them, but again, this couldn't have been possible without the team effort of this amazing group of girls,” the MVP remarked. “We know each other, we trust each other. We worked toward the goal of becoming world champions for our entire lives, especially in the last weeks. We all wanted this so bad, I am so proud of these girls. We all contributed in some way, and we are the champions of the world. We did not lose a single match on the road to the title, so now it's time to celebrate.”

Vander Wal è stata la quinta miglior realizzatrice del torneo con 144 punti (117 uccisioni, 13 ace, 14 blocchi) segnati in otto partite. L'americana non è scesa in campo solo nella partita di pool play contro il Messico e ha raggiunto la doppia cifra di punti in tutte le sue apparizioni nel torneo. In tre occasioni ha realizzato 20 o più punti: nella partita di apertura del torneo contro la Corea (26), nei quarti di finale contro il Brasile (23) e in semifinale contro l'Italia (21).
