Defending champions Cameroon are looking to extend their reign when the 2021 African Women’s Volleyball Championship takes place from September 12 to 19 in Kigali, Rwanda. The top two teams at the end of the competition will also earn berths at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship.

Cameroon and leading continental rivals Kenya top the list of 15 contenders at the 2021 edition of the championship which also features Rwanda, Burundi, Congo DR, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Morocco, Nigeria, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.

Cameroon came out on top in both continental championship final encounters with nine-time winners Kenya. In the last edition of the competition in Cairo in 2019, Cameroon won a down-to-the-wire match with a 16-14 margin in the tiebreaker.

Cameroon will be led by captain Christelle Nana and seasoned professionals Emelda Piata, Stephanie Fotso, Laetitia Moma and Simone Bikatal, who all saw action at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Japan. These veterans will be joined by some new faces.

Kenya have played in the final of the championships in the last five editions – the first three were top-of-podium finishes, followed by two consecutive silver medal finishes.

The Kenyans will miss the services of experienced players Jane Wacu and Noel Murambi for medical reasons.

The two players were part of the team that featured at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Esther Mutinda and Joy Lusenaka will fill the gap left by Wacu, while captain Mercy Moim, Leonida Kasaya, Veronica Adhiambo, Pamela Jekurui will be switching with each other in Murambi’s position as outside hitter.

Kenya’s middles are Edith Mukuvilani, Lorine Chebet, Gladies Ekaru and Yvonne Sinaida, and the liberos are Agripina Kundu and Elizabeth Wanyama. The opposites are Sharon Chepchumba and Emmaculate Chemutai.

The 2019 bronze winners Senegal will not be participating in this year's edition of the competition.
