Race for quarterfinal spots resumes on Tuesday

The 16 teams remaining after Phase 1 of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 in the Netherlands and Poland will continue to battle for places in the elimination rounds when the competition resumes on Tuesday. The teams progressing from Pools A and D will play in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, in Pool E, while the remaining eight, from Pools B and C, will gather in Lodz, Poland, for the matches in Pool F.

While Phase 1 results will also count towards the second phase record, teams that have already met at the tournament will not meet again in Pools E and F. Each team will play four matches. At the end of Phase 2, the quarterfinals will match 1st and 4th and 2nd and 3rd in each pool.

Pool E in Rotterdam will be the first to open the action with Japan taking on Belgium at 14:15 local time (12:15 GMT) on Tuesday. The Pool E programme is spread over six competition days, from October 4 through 9, with two or three fixtures on each day. Tuesday’s schedule also includes games between Italy and Argentina at 17:15 (15:15) and between Brazil and hosts Netherlands at 20:15 (18:15).

Reigning VNL and European champions Italy lead the Pool E standings on a perfect 5-0 win-loss record and 15 points. The next four teams down the table – China, Belgium, Japan and Brazil in that order – are all on 4-1 and 12 points, separated by set ratios. The Netherlands are in sixth on 3-2 and 9 points, followed by Puerto Rico (6 points) and Argentina (5 points) on 2-3 each.

In Pool F, defending world champions Serbia top the table with 14 points, and are unbeaten in five matches. Three teams are on a 4-1 win-loss record – Olympic champions USA with 12 points, Türkiye with 11 and Thailand with 10. The Dominican Republic with 11 points, hosts Poland with 10 and Canada with 8 come next down the pool standings on 3-2 each. Germany are bottom on 2-3 and 7 points.

The race in Pool F will take place from October 4 through 8, with four games a day and a day off on October 6. Tuesday’s first competition day in Lodz will start at 15:00 local time (13:00 GMT) with a duel between Thailand and Canada. Later that day, the United States will meet the Dominican Republic at 17:30 (15:30), Türkiye will face Germany at 19:00 (17:00) and Serbia will take on Poland at 20:30 (18:30).
