Italians Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava remain unstoppable at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event held in Hamburg, Germany, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday.

After winning two qualifier matches on Wednesday and triumphing in their main draw debut on Thursday, the Italians secured a pair of pool play wins on the third day of the event at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium and are now guaranteed a top-five finish.

Il 35enne Nicolai, medaglia d'argento olimpica a Rio 2016, e il 24enne Cottafava sono alla loro seconda stagione come partner e si sono garantiti almeno un quinto posto ad Amburgo, eguagliando il loro miglior risultato in un evento Elite16 di questa stagione, ottenuto a marzo a Tepic, in Messico.

La loro campagna all'Am Rothenbaum Stadium è stata finora quasi impeccabile: gli italiani hanno perso un solo set nelle cinque partite giocate ad Amburgo questa settimana.

Venerdì Nicolai e Cottafava sono stati estremamente efficaci, ottenendo vittorie contro i brasiliani Pedro Solberg e Gustavo "Guto" Carvalhaes (21-19, 21-14) e i tedeschi Nils Ehlers e Clemens Wickler (27-25, 21-19) per concludere il turno di apertura del main draw al primo posto nella Pool D.

Ehlers e Wickler, che venerdì avevano perso contro gli svedesi David Åhman e Jonatan Hellvig in due set (21-16, 21-13), sono passati agli ottavi di finale al terzo posto, dietro ai campioni d'Europa in carica, che in giornata hanno battuto Pedro e Guto in due set (21-13, 21-16).

I campioni olimpici e mondiali in carica, i norvegesi Anders Mol e Christian Sørum, si sono classificati in testa alla Pool A. I vichinghi del beach volley hanno vinto tutti e tre gli incontri disputati finora ad Amburgo, accedendo direttamente ai quarti di finale. Venerdì hanno ottenuto una vittoria per forfait contro gli olandesi Stefan Boermans e Yorick de Groot e hanno battuto i lituani Patrikas Stankevicius e Audrius Knasas in set diretti (21-10, 21-13).

Brazilians Andre Loyola and George Wanderley, who also secured a forfeit victory over the Dutch and swept (21-15, 22-20) the Lithuanians, advanced in second place, with Stankevicius and Knasas taking the third spot in the elimination rounds.

Pool B had Americans Miles Partain and Andy Benesh as the undefeated winners. The Gstaad Elite16 champions got a pair of wins on Friday too, taking Italians Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri down in straight sets (21-14, 21-16) and beating Spanish Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira in the tie-breaker (26-24, 16-21, 15-13).

Dutch Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen also had a strong day, sweeping both Herrera/Gavira (21-18, 21-15) and Carambula/Ranghieri (21-15, 21-12) and finishing second, with the Spanish also moved forward in third place.

In Pool C, Qatari Olympic medalists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan finished at the top after they defeated Czechs Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner 2-1 (17-21, 21-16, 15-9) and Germans Paul Henning and Sven Winter in straight sets (21-7, 25-23).

Czechs and Germans also advanced with victories over Polish Piotr Kantor and Jakub Zdybek. Perusic and Schweiner topped the Poles in two sets (21-17, 21-18) while Henning and Winter also got a sweep (21-19, 21-19).
