A Bangkok le partite chiave non mancano e la fase preliminare della VNL raggiunge il suo culmine

The Volleyball Nations League 2023 will reach a critical point for the women this week, with the last matches of the Preliminary Phase taking place in Asia. On Sunday, the eight national teams that will compete in the VNL Finals will be known, as well as the side that will need to fight to return for the event in 2024.

The city of Bangkok will host matches involving hosts Thailand, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and Türkiye in Pool 6 and several key encounters will take place between Tuesday and Sunday.

The two matches held on Tuesday will be critical ones. Two of the five Challenger teams, which need to avoid finishing the Preliminary Phase at the bottom of the standings to continue in the VNL, Canada and Croatia will collide at 17:00 local time (10:00 UTC). The Canadians are tenth with three wins (ten points) and will not only get in the mix for a spot in the Finals with a victory, but also virtually eliminate any chances of dropping from the VNL. Croatia, who are 14^th with two wins (six points), are in a tough battle with Bulgaria (15^th, with one win, five points) to avoid finishing at the bottom and could also use a win.

Later, at 20:30 local time (13:30 UTC), Thailand and the Netherlands will face each other. Ranked 13^th and 12^th respectively with the same campaign of two wins and eight points, Asians and Europeans will need to be nearly perfect this week in Bangkok in order to make a final push for the Finals and starting on the right foot would be of great help.

Mercoledì, il Giappone, settimo classificato (cinque vittorie, 16 punti) e l'Italia, ottava classificata (cinque vittorie, 12 punti), cercheranno di sconvolgere le squadre di rango superiore per avvicinarsi alle finali. Gli asiatici affronteranno la terza classificata Turchia  (sei vittorie, 19 punti) alle 17:00 ora locale (10:00 UTC), mentre gli europei incontreranno il quinto classificato Brasile (sei vittorie, 18 punti) alle 20:30 ora locale (13:30 UTC).

Giovedì sarà la prima "giornata intera" di azione, con tre partite: Croazia contro Paesi Bassi alle 13:00 ora locale (06:00 UTC), Brasile contro Canada alle 17:00 ora locale (10:00 UTC) e Thailandia contro Turchia alle 20:30 ora locale (13:30 UTC).

La giornata di venerdì potrebbe anche decidere la fede di alcune squadre nella VNL: il Canada non rimarrà in vita se non riuscirà a superare l'Italia alle 13:00 ora locale (06:00 UTC), il Giappone potrà forse prenotare il suo posto nelle Finali contro l'Olanda alle 17:00 ora locale (10:00 UTC) e Brasile e Turchia lotteranno per un miglior piazzamento in vista dei quarti di finale alle 20:30 ora locale (13:30 UTC).

Sabato l'Italia avrà buone possibilità di migliorare le proprie chance di accedere alle Finali quando affronterà il Canada alle 13:00 ora locale (06:00 UTC), mentre il derby asiatico tra Thailandia e Giappone alle 20:30 ora locale (13:30 UTC) potrebbe facilmente determinare la fede di entrambe le squadre nella VNL 2023.

Anche la domenica sarà caratterizzata da un paio di partite cruciali: il duello tra le contendenti alle Finali, Giappone e Italia, alle 17:00 ora locale (10:00 UTC) e l'incontro tra Thailandia e Brasile alle 17:00 ora locale (10:00 UTC).

Anche a Suwon si svolgeranno diverse partite fondamentali: i padroni di casa della Corea, la Bulgaria, la Cina, la Repubblica Dominicana, la Germania, la Polonia, la Serbia e gli Stati Uniti giocheranno nella Pool 5.

La Fase Preliminare della VNL prevede tre settimane di gare e ognuna delle 16 squadre disputerà 12 partite. Le otto squadre nazionali meglio classificate nella Fase Preliminare si qualificheranno per la Fase Finale, che si terrà ad Arlington, negli Stati Uniti, dal 12 al 16 luglio.
