Located just over 120km east of the Mexican capital Mexico City, Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl is the capital of the state of Tlaxcala, which is the smallest in area (3,991km2) among all 31 that form the nation.

Founded in 1520 and located 2,239m above sea level, Tlaxcala is home to nearly 100,000 people. Its name comes from a Nahuatl word that means "place of corn bread" (tortillas).

Tlaxcala already has its name written in the history of international beach volleyball as the Mexican city hosted the first-ever Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event, in March 2022.

Venues

Four venues will be utilized during the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship, including the iconic 3,500-seat Tlaxcala Plaza de Toros, which staged the matches of the Tlaxcala Challenge in 2022. A temporary stadium will also be built in the city, located at the Plaza de la Constitución, in front of the Tlaxcala Art Museum. Plazas de Toros at neighboring cities Apizaca and Huamantla will also host matches during the event.
