Il Giappone batte i campioni del mondo e sale sul podio della VNL

La generazione più talentuosa del Giappone degli ultimi decenni ha regalato alla nazionale maschile del Paese la prima medaglia nella Volleyball Nations League domenica a Danzica, in Polonia.

Con una prestazione eccezionale, gli asiatici hanno trionfato in una drammatica battaglia in cinque set (25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 17-25, 15-9) contro i campioni del mondo in carica dell'Italia nella partita per la medaglia di bronzo dell'edizione 2023 del torneo, alla Ergo Arena.

The VNL 2023 gold medal match, reuniting Poland and the United States, will bring the fifth edition of the tournament to an end on Sunday, at 20:00 local time (18:00 UTC).

The victory in the bronze medal match in Gdańsk brought Japan back to the podium in a world-level men's international volleyball event for the first time since 2009, when the Asians claimed bronze in the FIVB Grand Champions Cup.

The Japanese were a powerhouse in the 1960s and 1970s, having won three Olympic medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze) and two bronzes in the FIVB Volleyball World Championship in the period, and may have given the first step to becoming protagonists in the international scene again with their podium appearance in the VNL 2023.

The most popular face in the Japanese team, iconic outside hitter Yuki Ishikawa was phenomenal in the bronze medal match against the Italians. The team captain had a spectacular 21-point performance facing the world champions, getting all his points in kills, including the game-winner.

“We’re so happy with this victory,” an elated Ishikawa remarked. “I’m very proud of my team because we trusted each other the entire time, we’re all very good teammates and I thanked them for that after the match. We played very well in the first two sets, but Italy were serving very tough after that and we had problems. It was a very difficult match for us, but we won it.”

Kento Miyaura ha sostituito l'infortunato Yuji Nishida ed è stato protagonista di una prestazione straordinaria, con ben sette ace, 12 kills e un blocco, per un totale di 20 punti. L'esterno Ran Takahashi ha contribuito con 12 punti (11 kills, un blocco) al trionfo asiatico.

L'Italia si è dimostrata molto competitiva e ha preteso molto dai giapponesi, soprattutto grazie alla forte partita del suo trio di alto livello composto dal battitore esterno Alessandro Michieletto, che ha ottenuto 16 punti (11 kills, quattro ace, un blocco), dall'opposto Yuri Romanò, che ne ha totalizzati 15 (14 kills, un blocco), e dal battitore esterno Daniele Lavia, che ne ha aggiunti 14 (11 kills, tre blocchi).

Gli italiani hanno dominato il gioco dei blocchi, ottenendo 13 blocchi contro i quattro del Giappone, ma gli asiatici hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro nel guidare i loro avversari in uccisioni (54 a 53) e aces (nove a sette) - hanno anche beneficiato di un maggior numero di errori avversari (32 a 27) per emergere.

Dopo la VNL, i giapponesi lotteranno per il loro decimo titolo continentale nel Campionato asiatico 2023, che si disputerà a Teheran, in Iran, dal 18 al 26 agosto.

L'ultimo e più importante torneo del 2023 sarà la qualificazione olimpica FIVB Road to Paris. Gli asiatici ospiteranno la Pool B dal 30 settembre all'8 ottobre e si batteranno con Stati Uniti, Slovenia, Serbia, Turchia, Tunisia, Egitto e Finlandia per due posti ai Giochi di Parigi 2024.

L'Italia, che continuerà a cercare di vincere la sua prima medaglia nella VNL la prossima stagione, si concentrerà anche sulla competizione continentale dopo la conclusione del torneo e cercherà di difendere il titolo di Campione d'Europa vinto nel 2021 nell'edizione di quest'anno del torneo, che si giocherà dal 18 al 26 agosto nel suo Paese, in Bulgaria, Israele e Macedonia del Nord.

Con la qualificazione olimpica di pallavolo Road to Paris, gli azzurri affronteranno Brasile, Iran, Cuba, Ucraina, Germania, Cechia e Qatar nella Pool A, che sarà ospitata dal Brasile.
