Il Canada sorprende un'altra favorita a Xi'an

Un giorno dopo aver iniziato la propria campagna nella Pool C delle qualificazioni FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball con una vittoria sui più quotati Paesi Bassi, il Canada ha sconvolto un'altra favorita a Xi'an, questa volta sconfiggendo in quattro set le medaglie di bronzo olimpiche di Tokyo 2020 e i campioni sudamericani in carica dell'Argentina.

In the first game of the day in China, the world’s number 13 team Canada celebrated a over Argentina, who entered the tournament ranked sixth in the world. In the first set, the North Americans recovered from a four-point deficit to win it in the overtime. They rode the momentum to stay well in control in the second. In the third, it was time for the South Americans to overturn a four-point opponent lead to stay alive in the match, but the fourth was all about Canada and claiming their second win of the tournament, with outside hitter Eric Loeppky acing the match winner for a convincing 25-15 close.

Loepkky finished with 15 points, including two aces and two kill blocks, but that made him only the third best scorer of the match. Above him, cross-court teammate Stephen Maar and opposite Arthur Szwarc shared the top scorer honours with 16 points apiece. On Argentina’s side, opposite Bruno Lima and outside Luciano Vicentin led the scorers with 14 and 13 points, respectively. It was the unforced errors (38 from Argentina against 25 from Canada) that mainly tilted the outcome Canada’s way. The northerners also outplayed the southerners in blocking (10-5 in stuffs), while the Argentineans did better in attack (51-47 in spike kills) and in serving (6-5 in aces).

"In the first set, we started slow, but we came back to the game rally by rally and won the first set, which was important as that gave us a lot of confidence," commented Canada’s Finnish head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo. "And then when we lost the third set, it did not affect our game in any way. So bravo to the guys for that! We will keep calm, focused on getting better with each game, recover and have energy for the next matches."

I Paesi Bassi, invece, si sono ripresi dalla sconfitta di sabato contro il Canada con un netto 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) contro il Messico domenica, infliggendo ai nordamericani la seconda sconfitta diretta del torneo. L'opposto e capitano Nimir Abdel-Aziz è stato il protagonista con 20 punti, tra cui quattro ace e due blocchi, con una percentuale di successo del 54%.

La Polonia, grande favorita, è sopravvissuta allo spavento del primo set, negando un set point bulgaro prima che Bartosz Bednorz potesse ribaltare la situazione con due kill block consecutivi per il 26-24. I leader del ranking mondiale FIVB hanno poi controllato i due set successivi, conquistando il 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) e la seconda vittoria nella pool. Bednorz ha guidato i polacchi con 16 punti, tra cui tre blocchi, mentre l'opposto e capitano della Bulgaria Tsvetan Sokolov è stato ancora una volta il top scorer con 20 punti, tra cui tre ace e un blocco.

Nell'ultima partita della giornata, i padroni di casa della Cina sono riusciti a vincere il loro primo set del torneo, ma il Belgio si è dimostrato più forte e ha ottenuto una vittoria per 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17). Il battitore esterno e capitano Sam Deroo ha fatto fuoco e fiamme con quattro ace e tre blocchi di uccisioni per essere in cima alla classifica dei marcatori con 25 punti. Con una percentuale di successo del 63%, l'opposto Ferre Reggers ha aggiunto altri 24 punti, tra cui tre blocchi e un ace. Yu Yuantai, Zhang Guanhua e Dai Qingyao hanno guidato la Cina con 17, 15 e 14 punti rispettivamente.

Dopo un giorno di riposo lunedì, le partite della Pool C riprenderanno martedì.
