L'Egitto rimonta e batte il Giappone

L'Egitto ha sconvolto i padroni di casa della Pool B, il Giappone, nella seconda giornata del FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier maschile a Tokyo, rimontando da due set di svantaggio e vincendo in cinque set, consegnando alla squadra numero cinque del ranking mondiale FIVB la prima sconfitta del torneo.

Nothing seemed to forebode such an outcome, when the home side dominated on the court during the first sets on the way to landslide results, but things changed from the third set on as the world’s number 19 team Egypt fought on to an amazing turnaround. Opposite Reda Haikal was on fire as the Africans took the upper hand in sets three and four. Then 22-year-old outside Abdelrahman took charge in the tie-breaker to lead the team to a sensational victory. It was the second day in a row that Japan allowed their opponents a comeback from two sets down, but while they managed to stop Finland in the fifth set on Saturday, there was no stopping Egypt on Sunday.

Haikal finished with 20 points for the winners, including two kill blocks. Middle blocker Mohamed Masoud excelled with four kill blocks towards an 11-point total, while Eissa added another 10 points, all in attack, including the match winner. Japanese stars Yuki Ishikawa and Yuji Nishida shared the match top scorer honours with exactly the same record of 24 points each, including two aces and a block. Ran Takahashi finished with 16 points to his name.

“Today was very different, the ‘most different’ match in my whole life! It was great! A night for history!” Haikal told Volleyball World. “It wasn’t that easy. It was hard emotionally and physically. You are playing against a very big team, Japan, in Japan, in front of ten thousand people watching. So I’m really happy and very proud of this good job done by the team and the staff. It was a very big step tonight towards the Olympics in Paris, which is great, and I hope we can continue this way. When you have big dreams and big goals, you never give up.”

Non ci sono state sorprese nelle prime tre partite della giornata a Tokyo.

Innanzitutto, la Slovenia ha ottenuto una combattuta vittoria per 3-0 (28-26, 30-28, 25-22) contro la Türkiye, la seconda in due partite giocate. L'opposto Rok Mozic è stato protagonista con 20 punti, tra cui un ace e un blocco. Gli esterni Klemen Cebulj e Tine Urnaut hanno aggiunto 13 punti a testa. Guidata dai fratelli Lagumdzija, la Türkiye ha lottato con tutte le sue forze, spingendo i primi due set ai supplementari, ma non è riuscita a creare un'altra sorpresa dopo la vittoria di sabato sulla Serbia. L'opposto Adis Lagumdzija ha messo a segno 16 punti. Il fratello minore Mirza ne ha aggiunti 14, tra cui tre blocchi e un ace.

La Serbia si è ripresa dalla sconfitta di sabato contro la Türkiye con un 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-21) sulla Tunisia. L'opposto Drazen Luburic ha realizzato 18 punti, compresi due ace, seguito dagli esterni Pavle Peric con 15 e Marko Ivovic con 12 punti. Il 20enne esterno Oussama Ben Romdhane è stato il giocatore più produttivo della Tunisia con 16 punti, tra cui due ace e due blocchi.

Gli Stati Uniti hanno ottenuto un'impietosa vittoria per 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-17) sulla Finlandia e si sono portati in testa alla classifica della pool con un rapporto di punti migliore rispetto alla Slovenia, seconda classificata. L'esterno Torey Defalco ha impressionato con cinque ace e due blocchi di kills per un totale di 14 punti. Altri due giocatori americani hanno raggiunto la doppia cifra nella partita. L'opposto Matthew Anderson ha concluso con 12 punti, mentre il centrale Jeffrey Jendryk ne ha aggiunti altri 10.
